Dragonflies - B.O.P. (Bereaved Oncology Parents) was founded in 2005 by Jill Spence, Paula Puckrin, Ali Burton and Sue Carey, three bereaved parents and a Sargent Social Worker.
Jill, Paula and Ali have all experienced the death of a child. For the last three years they have supported each other throughout the illness, death and bereavement. The bereavement support services available to them after the death of their children varied depending on where they lived.
Probably one of the most valuable sources of support they received was from each other, being able to talk to another parent who knew just how they felt.
What about the dad’s you might ask, well they are David, Steve and Rob and on the few occasions that they have all met, all three have commented on how helpful it was to be able to talk to another man in the same position as themselves!
Dragonflies - B.O.P. is a group that has been born out of the need to support other bereaved oncology parents.
The group aims to support other bereaved oncology parents via:
O A monthly self help group where parents can get together to meet other bereaved oncology parents. They believe that forming this group may help parents understand how others are feeling and how they cope with different milestones (Easter, Christmas, Birthdays, First Day at Primary/Secondary School Etc)
O Supply Information about other bereaved services in your area that other parents have found useful.
O To offer an ear to other parents via e-mail, phone or letter.
Ali, Jill, Paula, Steve, Rob and David have valuable experiences to share and support other parents. They have also participated in an accredited training course to broaden their knowledge about running groups: Their skills include: O Group Facilitation O Gender differences in grief O Creative writing as a means of grief
Other people involved in the group are David Spence who is a bereaved sibling. David offers the group technical support and hopes eventually to be a part of setting up a Bereaved Sibling Group.
Sue Carey, A Sargent Social Worker who works mainly with children and young people with brain tumours.
After the group has been established for several months the next step is for a sibling group to be set up to run along side the parent group. This would be headed by David Spence, himself a bereaved sibling. Plans for this have not yet started but they will be in the near future.
Remember Although we may not have yet met you will be among friends. |
